I am about to take part in an Enduro Race across the Southern Cape of Africa in October 2012 for charity. I will be riding for up to eight hours each day across some of Africa's toughest terrain.  Along with other riders from all over the world it is quite possible that I may be the only Female riding in this race. My aim is to raise £5000.00 which will be donated to four charities. Nelson Mandela Children's Fund. UNICEF. Touch Africa. Sentebale. As a children's nurse I find it very sad that children are dieing on a daily basis because they don't have enough to eat or even the basic health care that we enjoy and take for granted here in the UK. I hope to see some of the existing work that has been completed and hopefully be encouraged by on going projects.

I recently had the opportunity to meet one of the representatives who has worked for UNICEF and the Nelson Mandela foundation. I spent some time asking her about the progress that was being made in such a poor country, where just having water to drink for many involved miles of walking on a daily basis. I was struck by her enthusiasm! even when times were extremely hard and there seemed little hope ahead. There is progress! but as the saying goes, Rome wasn't built in a day. It takes time to alter peoples perceptions of how life could be! when for so long poverty and starvation was something that for generations is all that surrounded you.

When I heard about The Enduro Africa Race For Life, I thought I could do this. Doing something I loved came to mind, an adventure, riding across Africa on an off road bike to raise money for charity. I ride speedway  and motocross as a hobby now, so the thought of riding off road for 1200 miles didn't really worry me, I just needed to become bike fit and prepare myself mentally. I thought about it for a day and decided to do it. Recently I had the opportunity to meet up with some of the riders I would be going out to Africa with and also meet many people that had already completed the event, some of whom had already been back to see the progress that had been made. I could see that those who had already completed the event and had been back were thrilled to have seen so much had been done. I could see and feel there emotions as they talked about the children and each person wanting to go back again and do more.

We had and Enduro weekend in Wales. I have to say that I was a little nervous, but the nerves soon disappeared. I met people from many walks of life. Doctors, Surgeons, Driving instructors and Builders. Prince William, Prince Harry and Charlie Boorman from A Long Way Down have all done this charity event. It was a great weekend and apart from the Enduro riding the main focus was on the charities that would benefit from our commitment to doing the event.

My target is to raise £5000.00 it is a lot of money, especially for a Children's Nurse. I have had some great support so far. All my riding kit was donated to me from Fox racing. I have also had free fitness training from ODFC, Redcar Speedway allowed me to do a collection at one of there meetings. Individual sponsorship has also helped and I am so grateful to them all.

I now have two more charity events which are being held shortly.
On the 16th of June 2012 I will be holding a charity event at the Redlands Sports Center In Weymouth Dorset. There will be a local live band performing in the evening, five a side football and Zumba through the day. On the 21st of July 2012 at The Kingston Park Rugby Club in Newcastle there will be another charity event, two live local bands. 'The Kings Of Leone and Betty And The Bad Cats.

I am sure that which ever event you can attend you will not only be supporting and benefiting the above charities, but you will have a great time.
My contact details for both events are email speedwaykate_1@hotmail.com Mobile 07860 429333. If you are unable to attend any of the above mentioned events but would still like to sponsor me then please feel free to contact me, it will be great to hear from you.

Many Thanks To Every One For There Support

Katie
